Rajinder Singh Bedi is one of the most prominent short story writers in the history of Urdu literature. His foundational short story, ‘Lajwanti’, serves as a critical lens through which to examine the neglected social and psychological trauma experienced by women during the partition. This essay presents a comprehensive feminist and psychological analysis of ‘Lajwanti’ focusing on the enduring psychological trauma and socio-ideological control imposed on repatriated women. Ultimately, ‘Lajwanti’ is revealed as a profound ethical critique addressing the endemic failure of patriarchal structures to facilitate genuine social and psychological rehabilitation, concluding that the imposed ‘violence of sanctification’ constitutes a sophisticated, symbolic form of renewed oppression whose legacy remains pertinent within contemporary social systems.
